Can I generate barcodes for free?

Yes. BarcodeSheets generates unlimited barcodes at no cost, with no account and no per-download caps. Every symbology on this site — Code 128, Code 39, EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A, UPC-E, ITF-14, GS1-128, Data Matrix, QR, and ISBN — is included, in both SVG and print-ready PNG.

Are these barcodes free for commercial use?

Yes. Barcodes you generate here are yours to use commercially — on packaging, labels, or products — with no license fee. A generated barcode image isn't the same thing as a registered GS1 number, though; see the next question if you're selling through retail.

How to generate a barcode in bulk?

Use the bulk tool: upload a CSV or Excel file, map which column holds your data (and optionally a label-text column), then download a ZIP of PNG or SVG files, or hand the rows straight to the label-sheet builder. It runs entirely in your browser, no upload.

Do I need to register my barcode numbers?

Only if you're selling in retail stores or marketplaces that look up GTINs in GS1's database — that requires a real, GS1-licensed number, which no barcode generator can hand you on its own. For internal use, inventory, or anywhere you control the scanner, a barcode generated here works as-is. See our GS1 guide for how registration actually works.

What barcode type should I use?

Code 128 is the safest general-purpose default — it encodes any text and is widely supported. If you're labeling a retail product for stores or marketplaces, use EAN-13 (international) or UPC-A (US/Canada) instead, since that's what point-of-sale scanners expect.

Can AI chatbots make barcodes?

Not real ones. Chatbots like ChatGPT or Gemini can only draw an image that looks like a barcode — pixel art with plausible-looking stripes — not one that actually encodes any data; scanning it does nothing or returns garbage. BarcodeSheets instead encodes your exact data into a spec-correct symbol, verifies it by decoding it back in your own browser before you download, and warns you when retail GS1 licensing applies (see our GS1 guide).
